The Hardest Step: Getting Started (on a Healthier You)


In my first blog post I feel obligated to get in to some deep philosophical mumbo jumbo about how we are all on some journey to better ourselves. So let’s begin. As with everything that requires work and effort, starting is the hardest step in any change that you will make in your life. I have been thinking about making this blog for months now because I know that it will help with networking and helping people improve their health, but I have procrastinated. I told myself “There are a lot of changes going on in my life right now, and I don’t have the time and energy for that. I don’t even know where to start. Now isn’t a good time.” Think about it for a minute. Just to start this blog I had to do research to see what site would be best for me to blog on, learn about all the intricacies of designing an appealing blog, gather ideas on the best ways to market myself, and consider a target audience.

In many ways, your efforts towards improving your diet and health have started the same way. Maybe your doctor or dietitian told you that you need to lose weight or improve your diet. Maybe your friends or family have told you that are really concerned about your health. You hear it and agree, but don’t change anything. Like me before starting this blog you think, “Now isn’t a good time.” It’s the holidays so I’ll start next week. Sally’s birthday is Monday, so I can’t start then either. My friends want to go to a buffet on Sunday, so I’ll just start next week. I have some news for you: there is never a perfect time to change your diet and make healthier lifestyle choices. If you wait too long you may be forced to change by a heart attack, stroke, ect or you may die and never have a second chance to change. You might be afraid that the changes are too hard to make, you have tried diets before and failed, or you “don’t know where to start.” You may have felt overwhelmed. I will teach you what matters and strategies to put you in control. You can do it!

The internet and media are cluttered with nutritional advice from the Paleo fad to detox/cleanse diets, Dr. Oz’s latest supplements for weight loss, the gluten-free diet, ect. Should you cut out sugar completely or is fat the bad guy? Everybody seems confused about what to do – what matters. My goal with this blog is to provide clarity and provide you with the knowledge to empower you to maximize your control over your health. You need to know what will make the biggest difference in your health and not worry about the rest.

Just like my blog is starting out plain and empty, you will not be perfect at first. You don’t have to be perfect! You might eat half a box of cookies. I might procrastinate on writing my next blog post. You might eat when you are bored instead of when you are hungry. I might make a mistake on a blog post and need corrected. However, like me, you will need to take this first step: dedicate yourself to this long-term change in your lifestyle and dedicate yourself to improvement.  Find the reasons that motivate you to make this change: you want to feel better, you want to look better, you avoid getting diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disease, you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol already and want to improve your condition, you want to live longer, and you want to live to see your kids and grandkids grow up – make your own list and look at it frequently, especially if you feel like giving up.
